The extended karst tables of the Iblei mountains characterize the landscape of the sweat end of Sicily, at the turn of the provinces of Ragusa and Syracuse.

It is above all in the latter that the plateau assumes spectacular aspects for the presence of deep fractures, called "quarries", which crown the edges.

It is canyon produced by the erosion of the waterways that still flow on their bottom, with sometimes superb aspect as happens in the case of Cavagrande del Cassibile, one of the most majestic and suggestive, now protected as a nature reserve, was in the Paleolithic era, the seat of inhabited settlements. The walls were excavated eight thousand cave tombs of the type in Grotticella, dating back to the 10th and 9th century BC.

Established in 1990 in order to preserve natural vegetation, and restore its Mediterranean forest vegetation as well as to defend and increase Mediterranean fauna, the Cavagrande del Cassibile Natural Reserve It affects a vast area 2,760 hectares, falling within the municipalities of Avola, Noto and Syracuse.

The protected area incorporates a stretch, about 10 km long, of the Fluviale del Cassibile rod, one of the most important rivers of south-eastern Sicily, which, getting highly grossed among the rocks of the Hyblean plane, generates a canyon, deep in some sections over 250 meters, with steeply vegetable walls.
