It stands like a small jewel perched on a plateau overlooking the Asinaro valley, covered with citrus groves, almond groves and fruit trees. Its beauty, so harmonious that it seems like a scene from a film, was born from a tragic event: the earthquake of 9-11 January 1693, which brought destruction and death to this part of Sicily, but also gave a strong impulse to reconstruction, to rebirth. Before then, the city stood 10 km away on Monte Alveria. Of very ancient origins, Noto was the birthplace of Ducezio, who in the 5th century. B.C. he made the Greeks tremble for having made the Sicels rise against them. After the earthquake of 1693, for the reconstruction, after extensive and lively debate, a less impervious and larger place than the mountain site was chosen, such as to allow the creation of a simple, linear system, with right-angled intersections and parallel, wide streets, according to the new baroque taste.

The majestic buildings, all built with local limestone, soft and compact, with the whiteness that time and atmospheric agents have colored, creating that magnificent golden and rosy hue, which the light of the sunset accentuates. At the reconstruction, led by the Duke of Calastra, representing a Noto of the Spanish viceroy, many Sicilian artists participated, including the architects Paolo Labisi, Vincenzo Sinatra and Rosario Gagliardi, who, influenced by Borromini, is certainly the artistic personality who most profoundly influenced the monumental complex of Neto. The city was built by studying and enhancing the perspectives in a singular way, playing with the lines and curvatures of the facades, with the decorations of the shelves, the curls and volutes, the masks, the cherubs, the balconies with wrought iron parapets that bend into graceful and pot-bellied shapes. TO Noto that baroque germ has blossomed which, brought by the hands of Italian artists, saw the style flourish throughout Europe. Today, "Noto an island within an island appears...
